Early life of Trinity Rodman

Trinity Rain Moyer-Rodman, born on May 20, 2002, in Newport Beach, California, is the daughter of Michelle Moyer and former NBA player Dennis Rodman. Raised primarily by her mother alongside her brother, DJ Rodman, Trinity experienced significant challenges, including periods of limited communication with her father and instances of living in their car. She also has a half-sister.

From a young age, Trinity showed a keen interest in soccer, starting to play at four years old, and stated that it felt like home to her by age seven or eight. Her family, particularly her mother and sister, supported her aspirations to become a professional soccer player. At ten, she joined the SoCal Blues soccer club, achieving notable success by winning four national championships in the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) and maintaining an impressive five-year undefeated streak.

Trinity attended Corona del Mar High School for her freshman year before transferring to JSerra Catholic High School, though she did not play for the latter. Initially committed to the UCLA Bruins for collegiate soccer, she changed her plans to follow her brother to the Washington State Cougars for the 2020 season. However, her freshman season was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting her decision to pursue a professional soccer career.

Rodman, at 18, became the youngest player ever drafted in NWSL history when the Washington Spirit selected her as their first pick (second overall) at the 2021 NWSL College Draft. Before the draft, she had never visited Washington, D.C. Her professional debut came on April 10, 2021, where she scored a goal shortly after being substituted against North Carolina Courage during the NWSL Challenge Cup. Rodman assisted in a crucial stoppage-time goal for a 1-0 win over Racing Louisville and played in all four matches of the Challenge Cup, contributing to the Spirit’s fourth-place finish in the East Division.

In her rookie regular season, Rodman emerged as the Spirit’s second-leading scorer with 6 goals and 5 assists across 22 games, helping the team secure a playoff spot with an 11–7–6 record. She played a pivotal role in the playoffs by scoring in the Spirit’s 2–1 victory over OL Reign and contributed an assist in the league championship final, aiding the Spirit in clinching their first league title. At 19, she set a record as the youngest player in league history to record a playoff assist.

On November 17, 2021, Rodman was honored as the NWSL Rookie of the Year and was included in the NWSL Best XI. She was also awarded the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year the following month. On February 2, 2022, she signed a contract extension with the Washington Spirit that runs until the end of the 2024 season, with an option for 2025, reportedly worth $1.1 million, making her the highest-paid player in NWSL history.

She made her comeback in the playoff semifinals, contributing to a win over the Thorns, but struggled during the NWSL Championship, where she did not register any shots in 33 minutes during a loss to Gotham FC.
